Dwayne is a
practising cosmetologist and hair consultant who, in addition to
giving people the results they desire in maintaining healthy hair,
runs his website
www.askdwayne.com |
Were you always interested in hair and what made you decide to
become a consultant? |
I’ll say that I was always curious about how hairstylists could
“transform” the ordinary people into the extraordinary or make
people look like superstars. To some extent, I have always done
consultant work, (I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for 5 years)
but I felt limited, by only being able to consult my clients…. so I
started hosting seminars, and after I saw a great need for the
information that I possessed, I wrote an e-book, entitled What Your
Hairstylist Doesn’t Want You To Know”, which was very well received!
From then on, I decided to do hair consultant work online. I started
on a site with a lot of traffic. Recently, I decided to offer it as
a service on my site as well. At the current time, I still do
consultant work on both websites, but I’m really trying to encourage
people to find me (for consultant work) on my site! |
| |
What has been the greatest challenge so far in your career ? |
| |
The greatest challenge in my career so far has been trying to spread
information to the masses via the internet. I realize that when
doing something that has never been done before, you need faith,
patience, quality work and time, to prevail. The hardest part seems
to be the fact that I’m travelling a new path! The concept of my
website is so new, and different, that I can’t learn form the
mistakes (or breakthroughs) of those before me, because no one has
travelled the path that I am on. Not that there aren’t any sites
out there that have some of the same concepts that www.askdwayne.com
does, but I think we all are travelling different roads and I want
to take my concepts and ideas (for the site) to the next level. |
| |
So why go “On Line”– is there a business future or is it a necessity
nowadays in order to enhance your chosen profession... |
I’ve taken my business online to reach as many people
in need as I possibly can. My message/mission is limited to those in
my presence, when I do my work offline. Online, I have a worldwide
audience and the opportunity to be limitless.
I don’t think that I must be online for the survival of my business,
but it allows me to reach an unlimited amount of people in need, fast
and cost efficiently. |
What support do you receive / received so far from your peers? |
I have received tremendous support form fellow stylists, and companies
online with websites. For example I am featured on bellaonline.com
website, on a monthly basis. I get invited to speak at speaking
engagements on a regular basis and I was nominated volunteer of the
month on allexperts.com (after a very small amount of time doing
consultant work for the public) |
Are you pro chemically treated hair types – relaxers etc or do
recommend natural styles ? |
I have always believed that beauty is something that you bring out,
not put on. I am neither for relaxers, nor against them, I think that
style is an individual choice. If that happens to be a part of your
style then more power to you! If you decide to wear your hair
natural…then that choice is now a part of your style (again, more
power to you)! I do feel that the way a woman wears her hair and
carries herself says a lot about her. |
Must everyone be treated as an individual when
cutting/coloring/curling hair? |
I treat everyone as individuals when I interact with
them. In the salon, I customize all cuts, color and styles. Everyone
can’t wear the same cuts or haircolor, so I base my styles on their
facial shapes, and their personality,
I base my colors on their skin tone and the time of year it is (season
wise—winter, spring, summer, fall). I take all this into
consideration before I perform a service or make a recommendation. |
Have you yet to fulfil any goals or aspirations inside or outside
consultancy profession? |
I have fallen short of some of my personal goals.
Sometimes, I find that I just can’t be of service to someone in need
and that is disappointing. I try hard to help everyone that wants to
be helped, but just can’t do it. As far as for my site I am actually
surprised at how well it is doing and how much love and support other
sites, the public, and the press have given me!
Eventually I want to have at least 15,000 subscribers to my site, and
the look and feel of an offline magazine, with the speed and
effectiveness of some of the top sites online. I want to be the “go
to” reliable source people go to when they have hair questions or hair
issues. I’ve even turned down offers to work for product companies,
just so that we would not be bias when their products get critiqued,
online! |
