DANDRUFF
(Pityriasis) |
|
|
Dandruff, or pityriasis, is white, or
gray flaky skin that peels from the scalp. This process of shedding
skin happens at a fast enough rate where the
skin sheds in big chunks. Although dandruff is mostly found on the
scalp, there have been cases where it has been found on the chest,
eyebrows, ears, and/or back. Even though it is natural, common, and
harmless, dandruff is very unattractive, and in most cases,
embarrassing. |
| |
Just
because you have oily hair, doesn't mean that you won't get
dandruff. There are two different types of dandruff, pityriasis
capitis simplex (the
dry type) and pityriasis asteatoides (the greasy, waxy type). Both
forms are contagious and can spread from one person to another by
using brushes/combs that contain dandruff. |
| |
Pityriasis capitis simplex (the dry
form of dandruff) is characterized by itchy scalp and small white
scales. This type of dandruff is usually caused
by poor circulation, lack of nerve stimulation, improper diet,
and/or blocked oil glands. |

How to Treat (Dry Dandruff) |
| |
Brush your scalp for 5 mins (bringing
the flakes to the surface)
Apply antiseptic to the scalp
Shampoo with either a mild or medicated
shampoo
Follow that with a moisturizing
conditioner
Rinse and proceed to style the hair
Pityriasis steatoids (the greasy, waxy type) is a scaly condition of
the epidermis. People with oily dandruff usually have it because of
a hormonal
imbalance. Overactive oil glands on the body can force the skin to
shed prematurely. The scales mix with sebum, and stick to the scalp
in patches.
This may cause the scalp to itch. If scratched to hard, the greasy
scales can tare off and bleed or ooze sebum. If this happens, seek
medical
treatment as soon as possible. |

Causes of Dandruff |
|
|
Dandruff is believed to be directly
related to lack of rest and stress! Bad nutrition, too much gel,
hairspray, and not rinsing shampoo well enough
off of the scalp, are said to have a hand in it as well. |
