We’ve all had one at some point in time.  We experiment with so many different styles, that at one stage we too have been experimented on!

I had to get my hair done.  I had left my extensions in so long that I thought they were my own!  My usual hairdresser had gone away and I just could not wait for her to get back, even though it was the following week.  The salon in question was recommended by my sister, so I was not as anxious as I would have been.  It was busy, so my confidence grew.  Lots of clients…they had to be good!  The stylist took my name and seated me down.  I was going for the colour and relaxer today, and nothing could stop me.  I didn’t notice that the most important step was missed out on my new style.  THE STRAND TEST.  The colour was applied and the relaxer put on.  I was happy as I left the salon, vowing to return again.

By that night I began to feel a little sore, and my head was itching slightly.  But we all know that a sign like that is common when you’ve just had a fresh relaxer.  In the morning, my face looked puffy, and promised myself an early night for my sins, thinking no more of it.  By that same afternoon at WORK, above all places, the left-hand side of my face had swelled so bad that my eye was closing over.  My supervisor immediately told me to go home and rest.  I drove back feeling scared.  What was happening to me?  Did I eat something at lunch that did not agree with me?  Had I burst a blood vessel?  All sorts of questions were going through my mind.  My partner was visiting his parents abroad, and was coming back tonight.  He had been gone for two weeks and I had missed him like mad, but my face was a mess and I did not want him to see me like that.  To describe it best to you, I looked like the female version of the Elephant Woman!  I needed help.

I called my Mother, who believed that maybe I had had an adverse reaction to the chemicals in the dye.  The next point of call had to be the doctor’s.  It all made sense.  No strand test was done.  The salon had no experience of my hair, and I had no experience of them.  The doctor confirmed that I reacted badly to the ingredients in the dye, and cases like these were being reported more and more.  I was prescribed pills to take to reduce the swelling, but if I did not see any difference to admit myself to hospital.  This was serious business.  The doctor reluctantly told me after the event that the swelling could have killed me as my blood vessels could have popped!  I had come close to death, through visiting a hair salon!!

Now I know what to say, and what to ask for in the salon.  If you don’t receive the level of service you expect, go elsewhere.  Looking back, I should have waited another week .... what's another week when your extensions have already been in for 6 months!
