 Interview with - Nedjetti

Nedjetti (pronounced Ned-Jet-ee) means 'to protect'. This could not be a more accurate description for this vibrant and extremely talented native New Yorker hair artist who is quickly making her mark in the entertainment industry.

Nedjetti's signature hairstyles and hair care interviews have graced the pages of numerous magazines including: Essense ,SalonSense (professional of the month), Velvet Park (cover), Globe (cover), Upscale, Honey, King, Black Beauty n' Hair (UK) & Woofin Girl Dept (Japan) among others.

As a professional, how did you get into the hair care industry?

"Taught by my mom, I’ve been cornrowing/braiding since age 7. My grandmother was a cosmetologist; therefore, it’s in my genes. I grew up expressing my talent and with the innate love of braiding/cornrowing. One day in 99’ while working in my bklyn. apt., I voiced out loud “I want my hair work in hair magazines”. Of course I had no idea how to accomplish such a goal, so I called photographer Eric Von Lockhart, bless his heart, which showed me the way and my work was published in NHS vol 1 & 2.   The rest is history…"

Do you work with male and female clients 'n' which do you prefer?

"Since I work from my home base, my male clients are by referrals only. I prefer women because I don’t have to worry about women coming on to me in the fearful manner men have done. One of my male clients actually tried to kiss me while I was about to wash his hair. Yes, I’ve had many women express their feelings for me, but it was never in an offensive and scary outcome. "

What are the most basic forms of natural hair styles you get requested to style?

"The most popular styles are double-strand and comb-coil twists and when worn after a month, the twists can be untwisted to the curly free-fro look that is just a popular hairstyle among the sistas. The cornrows from ear to ear with the rest of the hair double-strand are becoming eye candy as well. Loc maintenance and versatile loc styling are among the most requested hairstyles list as well."

What products are useful and are these products easily available?

"I use LeKair Aloe Conditioner, Nature’s Advantage shampoo and Aloe Vera gelly by Lily of the Desert Conditioner and Shampoo can be purchased in your local beauty supply store. The Aloe Vera gelly in health food stores such as Whole Foods."

Do you ever create your own styles?

"Always, because I create from a spiritual plane, I don’t look at magazines to duplicate what’s been done already. I’m a hair artist who believes in creating original work suited to enhance each unique person.  The artistry technique used may be the same among us artists, but like a finger print, the results are always different."

In your opinion  what is “natural” ?

"Being Natural is embracing your God’s given hair texture without chemical alteration. Coloring your hair is not changing your hair texture, therefore, in theory, it’s exempt."

What do you think suits your hair style best and who does your hair?

I'm now wearing my hair in a afro after cutting my locs of 9 yrs. Many people wonder why I chose to cut them and I've explained that 10 yrs ago when I went natural, I didn't experience the many natural hairstyles that are created without extensions. I went from being natural for 1 yr , to locing my hair. It's a rebirth for me and I felt I owe myself the complete joy to experience styling my hair in the versatile styles that I've learned to create on my clients hair.  Extension free of course!!

What hair type is best suited to your styles – thick / curly / fine etc ?

There was a time when people thought to have looser and wavy hair was the best, but now people are craving for kinkier texture hair. Good hair is healthy hair regardless of texture.  Thick hair is the most wonderful texture to have. It gives the hairstyles volume and body. The more kinkier your hair texture, the longer the hairstyles last. The looser density of one’s curls, the shorter time a hairstyle lasts.
